As of April 2008, Pokemon and is offshoots have sold over 180 million units. Not bad at all. Pokemon, published in 1995, originally released as a Game Boy game in the role playing genre. Since then, it only ranks behind the Mario franchise in popularity. Since its inception, they have expanded into trading cards, anime, toys, books, manga and other media, there seems to be no end to the Pokemon phenomina.

Game play takes place in Pokemon universe and consists of the benign sport of insect collecting by the Pokemon Games. The second goal is to train up more Pokemon so that you can battle against teams led by other Trainers. These three themes, battling, training and collecting are present in virtually every genre of Pokemon published including the Pokemon Trading Card Game.

When playing you catch a wild Pokemon by using a special tool, the Poke Ball which you throw at it. If caught and unable to escape, the Pokemon becomes owned by the Trainer. From then on it will obey the commands of its new master, unless of course it figures you are not experienced enough to be a Trainer then it becomes wild again.

Trainers are able to send their Pokemon to wage battle against others owned by other Trainers. This is a non-lethal battle which is won when one of the two Pokemon faints. During the game, some of the wild Pokemon can evolve into a similar but much stronger type of Pokemon.

In each game of the series, in single player mode, you are required to put together a team of Pokemon and defeat very many computer Trainers and their teams of Pokemon. Your path leads you through specific regions and your journey through the regions leads you to be challenged by events and opponents during your trip. As you travel you meet eight particularly powerful Trainers called Gym Leaders. You must defeat these special Pokemon to continue your journey.

Once you defeat them, you receive a Gym Badge and once you have collected all eight, you then get to face the Elite Four, the toughest Trainers of all, until you beat them and then have to face the Regional Champion. When you win the battle against that Pokemon, you earn the right to be crowned the new champion and receive the title of Pokemon Games Master.
